Ashirah (Mosque-to-mosque Preaching)

Ashirah is an Arabic word which means family. Ashirah, contextually, in Ta‘awun usage, is a mosque-to-mosque programme organised or conducted on weekly basis. Every well-trained member must have his own Ashirah and it is considered as a stage of maturity in the organisation for a member to have one Ashirah coordinating regularly every week. Ashirah is the closest enlightenment programme to (Salatul-Maghrib) since it is common to the congregation to wait for night prayer (Salatul-Isha) before going to their respective homes.
A relevant topic would be chosen by the preacher, to correct or enlighten the congregation on any burning issues locally, nationally or internationally affecting the Muslims in general. The first phase of Ashirah comprises youth and elders in the mosque.
It takes between 30 and 40 minutes in duration. The second phase is done after night prayer (Salat al-‘Isha') and it consists of youths alone but any interested elderly Muslim can be allowed to sit with them. The reason why the second phase of Ashirah is youth-centred is that its message is movemental and requires strength and struggling to change some bad things in the society.
It also requires memorisation of Qur’anic verses, Hadith and learning of Islamic civilisation and application of it in personal lives of the participants.
Moreover, Ashirah is used by the movement to disseminate general information relating to the Jama‘ah. There also, some new faces do join the movement with enlightenment on the relevant department they can work with in the Jama‘ah.

Tabyyeen is also a weekly admonishing and soul-nourishing programme held on weekly basis. At the headquarters, it is held on Friday but it varies in other branches, depending on the day that is mostly convenient for them. Tabyyeen consists of males and females of the Jama‘ah; almost all the members in a branch attend it to know the next action to be taken in the new week. During Tabyyeen, current affairs are treated particularly some issues affecting Muslims globally. Prior to the sermon of the Amir at headquarters or Naqeeb at a branch, some verses from the glorious Qur’an will be recited, memorised and translated for proper usage in the society.
Next to that is news across the world to be cast by the newscasters in the Information Department of the Ta‘awun Movement. It is considered as one of the most interesting episodes in Tabyyeen programme. After that, Amir or Naqeeb will admonish the congregation based on the topic relevant to current happenings in the society.
There are three categories of people attending Tabyyeen. First, the core members who have been in the movement participate fully in the programme. Second, the new and interested members attend for more knowledge about the Jama‘ah activities. Third, the loyalists and friends attend to know the progress of the movement and have evidence to the defend integrity of the Jama‘ah externally. Moreso, Tabyyeen takes place in a central mosque usually in the mosque built by the Jama‘ah or in a mosque permitted to be used temporarily in the community. It takes place on Fridays between 4:30pm and 6:30pm.

Zonal Programme (Al-Muhafasah)

Zonal programme is a training forum where da‘wah methodology is taught and the progress report of Ashirah (family or local da‘wah) is submitted to the zonal Naqeeb. Some verses from the glorious Qur’an are taught and memorised coupled with their exegesis. It also requires financial contribution of each member aimed at propagating Islam and executing some Jama‘ah projects in the town. Being a training programme strictly meant for the members only, any member who fails to memorise or remember the former lesson taught would be lightly punished to discourage laziness and nonchalant attitude towards the membership training. At times, such a member may be fined financially or to be told to do ‘press-up’ as an exercise for physical fitness.

Halqatu Awan

This is a forum to train the youth on Islamic understanding on sound creed, Qur’an, Hadith, civilisation, Fiqh and other knowledge relevant to movemental activities. It is the superlative training programme for regular members of Jama‘tu Ta‘awunil Muslimeen. Before a member could participate in Awan programme, he must have been attending some public and special programmes like seminars, conferences and workshops. One of the special ones is that the member must have had an Ashirah, coordinating in his locality or elsewhere thought the work of Allah should forever be of prime priority.
Awan being a forum of Tarbiyyah (training), requires thorough discipline, humility, endurance, steadfastness, selflessness and concentration. In Awan, it is compulsory for every participant to memorise some verses of the glorious Qur’an assigned to them at every sitting for spiritual elevation, serving as a bedrock for work of reformation and liberation. Awan is anchored by the Da‘wah Department and the office of Amir. Every Awan member must have his jotter and pen to write down the lessons. Otherwise such a member would be punished.

This is a monthly programme organised the by Da‘wah Department to enlighten the members of the Jama‘ah and general public in particular. It is a public programme which entails spreading of Islamic understanding, correction of wrong impression against Islam and addressing issues relating to individual life in the society. At Irshad, more light is shed upon some Islamic issues that look ambiguous to laymen in Islam. Questions and answers section is also inclusive to give room for exchanging of views and clarifications. There is no specific venue for Irshad. It is rotational. The issue affecting a particular society determines the venue of Irshad and topic of discussion.

Katibah is a training session held every two months. The real objective of Katibah is to know the preaching and level of development of some towns, because Katibah is a conglomerate of some towns within the branches of Jama‘tu Ta‘awunil Muslimeen. Katibah is divided into four: Katibah Abubakr, Umar, Uthman and Alli. Katibah Abubakr falls in Iwo town. Specifically, Katibah Abubakr consists of Iwo, Oluponna, Bode-Osi, Ejigbo, Aato, Ikonifin, Ile-Ogbo, Kuta and Akure. The leader of Katibah collects various information on the problems facing different Katibah under his supervision. Financial contribution is done to get money to execute any assigned project from the office of Amir.

Jabua (State Zonal Programme) Jabua consists of Kataib (plural of Katibah). It is quite noted that Katibah consists of some towns or branches of Jama‘tu Ta‘awunil Muslimeen. Thus, Jabua comprises Kataib. The function of Jabua is to supervise the Kataib which is usually divided into states. In Jama‘tu Ta‘awun, Jabua is divided into two: Jabua Umar and Jabua Solahudeen Ayyubi. Jabua Umar consists of Osun, Kwara (Offa), Ekiti and Ondo states while Jabua Solahudeen Ayyubi comprises Oyo, Ogun, Kwara (Ilorin) and Lagos States.

Qawafidu’l-Qurah (Village Islamic Propagation)

The Da‘wah Department sends some well-versed members in the department to various villages to disseminate the message of Islam to the villagers. Da‘wah Department believes that it is when people in the towns and villages understand Islam practically that it could be satisfied that Islam and Muslims are developing. The appointed delegates go to villages on weekly basis and explain Islam to the villagers from the elementary level. They teach the children the knowledge of Qur’an and other ethics of Islam.

Barnamij Palestine

Palestinian issue is one of the crucial events in Jama‘tu Ta‘awunil Muslimeen. The organisation has it in focus to liberate the Palestinians in the bondage of oppressors. It organises a big programme annually to remind the Muslims about the position of Masjidul-Aqsah in Islam. The movement acts according to a Hadith that says the Prophet of Allah was reported to have said that “It is not permissible to set for a journey with the intention of visitation to any mosque except three mosques: The mosque of Ka‘bah, the mosque of the Prophet (Muhammad) and the Al-Aqsah mosque in Palestine”.
Moreover, the Palestinian conference organised every year is usually graced by foreign lecturers especially from Yemen and Jordan. For example, the Palestinian conference held from July 5th – 7th, 2009 was graced by the guests of Aqsah, Sheikh Nedal Amin Abaadi who is a former member of Jordan Parliament and Sheikh Imad Issa, a Palestinian by origin but a Lebanon-based journalist, who is also a coordinator of the Institute of International Culture for Palestinian in Lebanon.
Ta‘awun Movement gives much significance to the knowledge of Al-Aqsah. Because of this, it organises three day lecture especially during the Aqsah conference held annually, revealing the historical background of Al-Aqsah, its position in Islam, the wars fought by Muslims to retain the sanctity of the mosque and what should be the impact of the contemporary Muslims to defend the integrity of Al-Aqsah mosque.
To update the movement, knowledge about Al-Aqsah mosque, scholarship was given to the members from Yemen to run a Diploma course on the issues of Palestine. The name of the institute is Institute of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Ahmar for Knowledge of Palestine. It is well known and spread by the Qudus Foundation in Palestine. In November 2008, two members of Ta‘awun Movement were given an opportunity to study a three-month Diploma course in Yemen on scholarship. The members were Ustaz Khidr Abdul Alim Hamzat (Abu Abdullah) and Ustaz Abdul-Lateef Abdul-Kareem Alowoesin (Abu Darajat). Both of them went for the course in Yemen successfully and returned to Nigeria in February, 2009.
In Ta‘awun National Secretariat, there is an office specified for Al-Aqsah Foundation which sees to the affairs of the Aqsah mosque and affairs of the Palestinian Muslims. During Gaza attack by Israelis from December 28, 2008 to January 18, 2009, Jama‘tu Ta‘awunil Muslimeen sensitised Nigerian Muslims especially the Muslims in the South-West of Nigeria for prayer and financial contributions to rescue the Muslims bombarded with chemical and biological weapons by Israeli soldiers in Palestine. All these are regarded as of much concern to Ta‘awun Movement. The organisation has been carrying some Islamic organisations along by making them understand the reason why the Al-Aqsah mosque should be protected by every Muslim.
